Monday morning brought some strange weather conditions as it rained, had sun shine, was warm and then cold At 10:40 a m. the temperature was 55 degrees, at 11:05 it was 39 degrees, and by 12:53 it was up to 46 again. The weatherman said there was little chance of rain, but there were several showers, including some snow flakes. Health and Human Services Secretary Richard Schweker proposed Sunday that three Social Security trust funds be merged temporarily to help put the system on more solid financial footing. Pakistan on Sunday accused the Soviet-backed government of Afghanistan of arming hijackers who held more than 100 people hostage for 13 days after diverting a Pakistanian jetliner to the Afghan capital of Kabul The hearing on Harmon Field Friday night at Columbus, brought out a lot of people from many parts of Polk County, who spoke in favor of keeping Harmon Field in operation. Most felt that the County Commissioners (Continued On Back Pagel Thieves Steal Truck, Laser Beams Hensons' Inc on Ridge Road was broken into early Saturday morning. Stolen was a 1980 Crew Cab Chevrolet truck, two laser beams, four big truck tires and some hand tools. The truck was located in a ditch near the Howard Street Ball Park, but the other equipment hasn't been recovered Hensons'. Inc. is offering $1000 Reward for (he two laser beams The estimated loss of the items taken is $15,000. Republican County Convention The Polk County Republican Convention will be Saturday, March 21 at 10:00 a.m. in the Polk County Courthouse in Columbus. The purpose is to elect a county executive committee and delegates to the Congressional District and State Republican Conventions. Bill Price will be the main speaker at the convention. Mr. Price has over 25 years experience ranging from precinct organization to working in National Republican Efforts He was recently elected chairman of Columbus No. 7 Precinct. A luncheon will be held following the convention at Pacolet River Plantation. Representative Charles Hughes of Hendersonville will be the featured speaker. All Republicans are invited. Fires The Landrum Volunteer Fire Department was busy Sunday, fighting three woods and grass fires. At 3:15 p.m. they had a brush and woods fire at the Frank Allison property on the Landrum Mills Road. Sunday at 9:30 p.m. a grass fire on Spivey Creek Road and Sunday at 11 p.m. a woods and brush fire on Clear Creek Road (near Carpenter Heights) On Dean’s List Named to the Asheville- Buncombe Technical College Deans List for the Winter Quarter were Judy P. Kell, Dental Hygiene; Sondra V Phillips. Dental Hygiene. Students must be full time, having a minimum 3.50 quality point average and be recommended by their Department Chairman to be on the Dean's List. Community Watch In Green Creek There will be another meeting of the Green Creek Area Community Watch. Thursday. Mar 19th at 7:30 p.m at the Green Creek Community Building. Anyone who has not ordered a Community Watch Sign should turn in their name and money to Elsie Cantrell before the meeting Thursday night. Another order of signs has arrived and can be picked up at the meeting. Those who have paid for their signs are asked to please do so Thursday night. Break-Ins The Polk County Sheriff's Department reports the following break-ins: The home of Mr. and Mrs. Bryson Gibson on Skyuka Road was entered Sunday night and three shotguns, a pistol and some change were taken The Coggins Service Station in Mill Spring was broken into Sunday night and $188 was taken. Early Saturday morning the Curiosity Shop at the Lake Lanier entrance on Hwy 176, Tryon was broken into and about $500 of merchandise was taken. Runner-Ups Mr. and Mrs Seth Vining. Jr have returned from Atlanta. Ga. where they saw White County girls basketball team defeat East Hall High School of Gainesville 46-39 in the AA state finals. East Hall had won the state championship the past two years, and had beaten undefeated Macon Couny 42-36 on Thursday night to reach the finals. East Hall is coached by Seth A. Vining Mr Vining and his wife the former Cathy Fincher are graduates of Tryon High School and Western Carolina Uni versify. Tryon To Face Pantego High The Tryon Tigers who are 20-3 will play Pantego 31-0 in the State Class A basketball finals Friday at 7 p.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum
